Pastor Eric’s Blog
What do you want? Deep down, at the core of your being, what…do you want?
What do you need? What is your soul longing for? What do you need to be completely content?
I was asked those questions this past week, and have been pondering them ever since. There are endless answers of course, and the answers may be different for each of us. Maybe we begin with wanting world peace, or to be debt free. Maybe we need financial stability or guaranteed health care. But as I’ve gone deeper into the depths of wants and needs, I think there is a theological answer that is the foundation of the Christian faith. Believe it or not, the answer begins with the new First United Methodist Church website.
It’s true! As we launch our new web site, we are offering a tool; opening a portal really, that has the potential to lead people to what they want and what they need from the depths of their souls. Ultimately there is only one reason why the eternal Christ became incarnate in Jesus. That reason is to draw us into lives where what we want and what we need intersect in lived reality.
“Oh, good grief!” The church communications director just threw up her hands in disbelief. “Eric, you’re getting all technical and are going to bore people!” She is surely thinking. Stay with me everyone, this is deep, but it is potentially life changing, and it can be achieved through our new web site.
What we all want more than anything, even if we don’t know it yet, is a relationship with God that is undeniable. There is only one way to develop that kind of relationship with God, and it is through connections with other people. The new web site, has been designed with that specific purpose. Tens of thousands of people are, and will be moving into our community leaving family and friends behind. They are almost desperate, maybe not on the surface, but deep down, to make connections; deep, life transforming connections with people that will lead to an undeniable relationship with God. Our church community can be the place those transformational connections take place, and the website is the portable to foster those connections.
What we need more than anything else is to know that we are deeply and endlessly loved by God. There is also only one way to come to that knowledge. God needs to demonstrate that love through other people. As we make connections, and respond to the love we receive from God, we reflect that love back and on to other people… well, this is the place where what we want and what we need intersect. This is the place of loving because we have been loved, and it is the reason God created us.
It’s time to check out the website. It just might change your life!
